The Index, Book 4: Revival

“What’s the meaning of this?”

“What’s going to happen next?”

“Why did she write this?”

The questions have been asked repeatedly with each of Katherine Gilraine’s books, and she is about to deliver the answers in the fourth installment of The Index Seriesan action-packed fantasy series that explores the Mages as a universal police force, and slowly uncovers the characters’ many secrets, and the consequences that those secrets have had on their lives.

Revival picks up immediately where Lineage had left its readers; with a computer that had crashed just as Shourron I was about to find out the answer to the question that had plagued him for all his life: Where did I come from? Son of a converted Mage mother and unknown father, Shourron I had gone on to earn himself an intergalactic-caliber rap sheet, and had spent his recent years attempting to figure out how that came to be. The truth about his checkered past is revealed not just to him but to the rest of the universe as well, and it is much bigger than even Shourron could have imagined.

Two key sayings exist for people of all beliefs and creeds: “Be careful what you wish for”, and “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” On an intergalactic scale, they take a whole different definition, and Gilraine pushes the psychological need for knowledge and answers to the limits. The answers that Shourron I receives in this book shatter every sense of identity and self-knowledge that he ever had, and many people have been in the situation where they aren’t certain if they want to know the answers to their most burning questions. Gilraine asks the same questions of Shourron I: just how much does one person want to know about themselves? How important is the past? And, as far as Rena’s extensive secret-keeping closet goes, when should it be opened if it contains those answers?

More important is the fact that this book is actually the end of this arc of The Index Series, and Katherine Gilraine had the challenge of closing up the many open questions of the previous three books, as well as provide the appropriate springboard into the next arc. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she had – as ever – participated in National Novel Writing Month 2009, armed with her previous manuscripts, and penned Revival. Simultaneously, her love of travel had taken over, and she had ended up winning NaNoWriMo 2009 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, attending saxophonist Warren Hill’s debut event, Jammin’ in Jamaica. With a smile, she credits the jazz music and the atmosphere of Montego Bay with the perfect writing environment.

But what of the book itself? “There have been many questions,” Gilraine says as she ponders the evolution of Revival. “So many readers got confused about the entire concept of a black aura as I have written it, and Shourron had become one of those people that you cannot help but be curious about. Well, he’s just as curious, but those answers are so much more than what he bargained for. I want to answer every question for the reader, but I also don’t want to lose sight of the fact that, whichever planet they come from, my characters are people too, with very human emotions in addition to their superhuman powers. They have to react to that knowledge too, and knowledge of the personal sort tends to reverberate. The story is far, far from over with this book.”

Katherine Gilraine still calls New York City home, and is still enjoying being a Jane of All Trades, running a graphic design/photography practice alongside a day job and her writing. The Index Series‘ second arc is expected to begin the pre-publication process in 2013.
