The Index, Book 1: Mages
The Index, Book 1: Mages, the first tale from author Katherine Gilraine, has quite the first sentence: “Finally.” With Gilraine’s elegant prose and clever storytelling, readers will utter the same upon reading. An amalgamation of science fiction speak and thoughtful character development, this story tells the tale of a thousand-year war that left the civilized universe in shambles and the story of the people assigned to slowly piece it back together. With the results giving way to several wars and myriad tragic deaths, three leaders are left exhausted, asking for time to simply . . . heal. But upon taking leave, the story just begins.
A truly prolific writer capable of fleshing out praiseworthy fiction, Gilraine is capable of sending the reader to another universe — literally. And like the vast worlds she creates with her craft, she too started from scratch, building layer upon layer. Gilraine is a bona fide New Yorker and a four-time winner of the famed National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), so she knows what it means to create a world where her passion for the story is as fervent as readers’ reactions to it.
Having studied criminal justice with a concentration in psychology, her keen understanding for the mental circuitry of her characters makes itself clear. Blending detail and intuit with craft, Gilraine work is both dazzling and concise. That work netted her an honorable mention at the 2009 Nashville Book Festival in the YA division. It had also competed in the 2010 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards, going up to the second, pre-quarterfinals round.
Publishing The Index by using CreateSpace allowed her to bring her world to fruition. It is available through both CreateSpace and Amazon. Gilraine says the story came to her at the young age of 14. Struck by her eclectic love for reading, she cites vast muses, including things from Celtic legends to historical fiction and the original Twilight Zone series. “If I could think up a futuristic world of sorts,” she says, “what would that be like? After a while, it started to come together. I didn’t start writing the actual drafts of it until I was about 17-18 and didn’t come up with the complete premise until in college.”
Perhaps it is Gilraine’s inclination to provide deeper meaning within an entertaining tale that really enlivens the story. She poses important questions: “Who and what am I? Who and what is important to me? How far will I go for what’s important? All of these are questions that no one is willing to ask of themselves, or of others — and why? Those are all cornerstones of who people are. While my characters have different lives, different perspectives on it, they ask themselves these exact questions, in various situations. It’s all about what the answers are. And that’s why this story is here.”
Katherine Gilraine currently works and resides in New York. Gilraine has written three books for this series and is currently completing the fourth.
